No matter how hard he tried, the script felt wrong. It was the polar opposite of his personality, and prospects could feel it in every awkward word he delivered. After months of struggling, his manager delivered an ultimatum: close your last consultation of the week, or we're letting you go.
Boyd was four months away from becoming a dad for the first time. He needed the income. He needed the insurance.
His last prospect sat down and said, "I'm going to save you some time. I've already decided I'm not doing this."
So Boyd did the only thing he could think of. He begged. Told the prospect he had a baby on the way and needed the job. The prospect bought, but told Boyd he'd be canceling.
That night he sat alone and realized something. So he threw out the script and went back to being himself, but with one key insight: winging it wasn't a strategy either. He needed structure. Just not a word-for-word script.
That's how the C.L.O.S.E.D Formula was born.
